LEXINGTON, Va. -- Emory & Henry sophomore quarterback Shannon Johnson (Iron Gate, Va./Allegheny) passed for 161 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 36 yards to lead the Wasps to a 24-10 over Washington and Lee in ODAC football action on Saturday afternoon.
E&H (7-2, 5-1) assumed a 7-0 lead on a 6-yard touchdown run by freshman running back Dan Hammonds (Newport, Tenn./Cocke County) with 8:44 remaining in the first quarter.
W&L (5-4, 2-4) responded on a 34-yard touchdown pass from freshman quarterback Zack McQuigg (Marriottsville, Md./Glenelg) to senior wide receiver Wes Hardy (Spartanburg, S.C./Spartanburg) with 5:25 left in the first quarter.
Johnson connected with sophomore wide-out Dorsey Hooker (Williamsburg, Va./Lafayette) on a 62-yard scoring strike with 34 seconds remaining in the opening period and W&L added a 33-yard field goal by junior kicker Brad Wiginton (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior) with 5:44 left in the half to make the score 14-10 at the half.
The Wasps added a 35-yard field goal by senior kicker Chris Epperly (Christiansburg, Va./Christiansburg) with 1:39 left in the third quarter and put the game away with a 1-yard touchdown run by Hammonds with 8:39 remaining in the game.
The Wasps were led by Johnson and junior tailback Earnest Cheatham (Richmond, Va./Lee-Davis). Cheatham rushed for 69 yards on 23 carries. Defensively, junior linebacker Nolan Jeffries (Luray, Va./Luray) recorded 13 tackles, including three for a loss.
Washington and Lee was led by junior tailback Marc Watson (Marietta, Ga./Walton), who rushed for 108 yards on 23 carries. He now has 1,224 rushing yards on the season, breaking the W&L season rushing record held by Kevin Weaver since the 1985 season. He also has 3,816 career all-purpose yards, breaking the record held by Chris Leiser (1977-80).
McQuigg, who was knocked out of the game in the first quarter, combined with freshman quarterback Sean McGarvey (Lutherville, Md./Calvert Hall) to complete 8-of-19 attempts for 118 yards. McGarvey was picked off twice. Hardy caught three passes for 59 yards and the one touchdown. Junior linebacker Steve Hostetler (Bath, Pa./Northampton) recorded 15 tackles to lead the defense. Junior linebacker Jeff Bahl (Cincinnati, Ohio/Cincinnati Country Day) notched 13 tackles and a sack.
Washington and Lee will complete its 2000 season on Saturday at Swarthmore College. Game time is set for 1:00 pm.
