W&L Claims ODAC Championship With 1-0 Victory Over Virginia Wesleyan

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Freshman midfielder Philip Miller (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood) scored the game's only goal at the 19:19 mark as Washington and Lee captured the 2000 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championship with a 1-0 victory over third-seeded Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon.

The lone goal was set up off a cross by senior midfielder Jon Wilson (Newport News, Va./Hampton Roads) and one-timed home by Miller.

Virginia Wesleyan (12-5-3) nearly tied the game with 30 seconds left off a header by senior forward Vinnie Sciullo (Marlboro, N.Y./John Jay) that was cleared off the goal line by W&L sophomore fullback Sean Hardin (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster).

Sophomore goalkeeper Tim Foley (Darnestown, Md./Georgetown Prep) held the Blue Marlins at bay the entire afternoon by making nine saves, while VWC freshman goalkeeper Sean Wheaton (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) stopped 11 of the 12 shots he faced.

Senior fullback James Abadi (Nicholasville, Ky./Lexington Catholic), Sciullo and Wheaton were named to the ODAC All-Tournament Team for Virginia Wesleyan.

Junior forward Andrew Grimes (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay), junior fullback Paul Wallace (Roanoke, Va./Patrick Henry), Foley and Miller each earned all-tournament honors for Washington and Lee.

W&L (18-1) will now compete in the NCAA Division III Tournament with the date, time and site to be determined.
