Generals Drop Home Opener To Lynchburg, 59-49

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Sophomore center Erika Whitten (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) scored 13 points, grabbed 16 rebounds and posted six steals as Lynchburg defeated Washington and Lee in ODAC women's basketball action on Wednesday evening.

The game was plagued by turnovers with the two teams combining for 64 miscues, including 34 by W&L. Washington and Lee also had trouble from the field, making 29.6 percent if its shots (16-54).

The Hornets (3-0, 1-0 ODAC) led at the half 24-21 with Whitten tallying eight points and five rebounds.

In the second half, Lynchburg jumped out early on a 14-4 run to give the Hornets a 38-28 lead.

The Generals (1-3, 0-1 ODAC) cut the lead to five with 1:54 to play after two consecutive three-point baskets by junior guard Alison Kudlacik (Manapalan, N.J./Manapalan), but W&L could close no further.

Junior forward Jessica Mentz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) led Washington and Lee with 13 points and 18 boards, while junior center Megan Babst (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) added 12 points and 13 rebounds.

The Generals will be back in action on Saturday afternoon as they travel to Ashland, Va., to take on Randolph-Macon at 2:00 pm.
