GETTYSBURG, Pa. -- The Washington and Lee men's basketball team began its season with a pair of losses at the Gettysburg Days Inn Tip-off Tournament on Friday and Saturday. The Generals were defeated by Gettysburg, 67-46, in the opening game and fell to Philadelphia University of the Sciences, 80-65, in the consolation game.
Against Gettysburg, the Generals trailed by just three points (35-32) with 10:05 remaining in the game, but the Bullets (1-0) went on a 9-0 run over the next 2:22 to take a 44-32 lead and cruised to the 21-point win.
W&L shot just 38.5 percent (15-39) from the floor and 47.6 percent (10-21) from the foul line in the loss.
Senior guard Will Ballard (Elkin, N.C./Elkin) led the Generals with nine points and five rebounds. Sophomore forward Jake McAlister (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights) scored eight points and pulled in four boards.
Against USP (1-1), the Generals again fell victim to an offensive spurt by the opponent. Trailing by four points (31-27) at the half, W&L was outscored by the Devils 16-3 over the first 3:46 of the second half and played catch-up for the remainder of the game.
W&L outrebounded USP, 33-29, but could not overcome 58.8 percent (30-51) shooting by the Devils.
Junior forward Bobby Bustamante (Miami, Fla./Christopher Columbus) led the Generals with 17 points, four rebounds and a career-high six assists. Ballard notched 14 points and sophomore forward Scott Hettermann (Falls Church, Va./Landon) totaled 13 points and eight rebounds.
W&L will be in action again on Saturday and Sunday as it participates in the Carnegie Mellon Tournament. The Generals will face host Carnegie Mellon in the opener at 3:00 pm.
