W&L Football Stumbles at Catholic, 47-0

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Running back Dan Boyle rushed for 197 yards and four touchdowns as Catholic handed Washington and Lee its first loss of the season, 47-0, in ODAC football action on Saturday afternoon.

The victory was the first win for Catholic over W&L in five tries. The loss also marked the first time that the Generals were shutout since 1995.

Catholic opened the scoring 31 seconds into the first quarter after Lonnie Meadows intercepted a pass by sophomore quarterback Bobby Littlehale (Villa Park, Ill./Willowbrook) and returned it 39 yards for a touchdown. Then, a 13-play, 83-yard drive was capped by quarterback Derek McGee's touchdown pass to Jason Weber to give Catholic a 14-0 lead with 6:45 left in the first quarter.

Boyle scored his first touchdown of the day with 54 seconds left in the first quarter to put the Cardinals up, 20-0. He then scored two more touchdowns in the second quarter to give Catholic a 33-0 lead at the half.

For the game, Catholic was led by Boyle and McGee, who completed 15 of 21 passes for 129 yards and two touchdowns. Wideout Jim Jankiewicz hauled in seven receptions for 72 yards. The Cardinal defense combined to sack the Generals' quarterbacks eight times. The Cardinals outgained W&L, 407-46.

Junior running back Marc Watson (Marietta, Ga./Walton) was held to just 14 yards on 14 carries. The quarterback combination of Littlehale and freshman Zach McQuigg (Marriotsville, Md./Glenelg) completed 10 of 22 passes for 52 yards and one interception. Sophomore linebacker Matthew Stavish (Sterling, Va./Park View) led the Generals' defense with 16 tackles.

The Generals will look to rebound on Saturday afternoon as they host Hampden-Sydney College in an ODAC matchup. Game time is set for 1:00 pm.
