LEXINGTON, Va. -- Junior forward Andrew Grimes (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) and sophomore forward Brad Murphy (Mantoloking, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) each scored two goals as Washington and Lee tied a school record for victories (12) with a 4-0 shutout of Bridgewater in ODAC men's soccer action on Thursday afternoon.
The only other season W&L (12-1, 8-1 ODAC) achieved 12 victories was in 1996, when it went 12-6.
The teams played to a scoreless tie at the half before the Generals exploded for five goals in the second half during an 18 minute stretch.
Grimes started the scoring in the 58th minute with a header off a feed from freshman midfielder Philip Miller (Kingwood, Texas/Kingwood). Grimes then gave the Generals a two-goal cushion at the 60:21 mark with another header off an assist from senior midfielder Jon Wilson (Virginia Beach, Va./Hampton Roads).
Murphy then notched two late goals to round out the scoring. Miller and Wilson both finished with two assists.
Senior goalkeeper Jordan Ginsberg (Jackson, Miss./Jackson) recorded two saves to pick up his first shutout of the season. Jon McClure made 10 saves in the net for Bridgewater (4-10-1, 1-7 ODAC).
W&L will return to action on Saturday afternoon as it hosts St. Mary's College (Md.) in a 3:00 pm contest.Â
