BALTIMORE, Md. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team won the championship of the Goucher Invitational on Saturday, posting a 4-0 record. The Generals defeated Goucher, 15-3, 15-5, 15-8, Mary Washington, 15-2, 15-9, 15-8, Dickinson, 15-8, 15-11, 15-5, and Mary Washington again, 15-8, 15-12, 15-13 to win the tournament.
Junior middle blocker Lindsay Ruckert (Metairie, La./Sacred Heart) was named the tournament MVP, while senior outside hitter Tori Hays (Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe) was also named to the all-tournament team.
Against Goucher, Ruckert led the Generals (15-5) with 10 kills, 10 digs, and four blocks. Freshman outside hitter Kristin Shelton (Austin, Texas/McCallum) chipped in with 10 kills and three blocks and senior setter Pam Saulsbury (Ridgely, Md./North Caroline) amassed 17 assists.
In the first match against Mary Washington, Ruckert tallied 13 kills and Shelton notched 12 kills and four blocks. Hays posted 10 digs, while Saulsbury collected 23 assists.
Ruckert again led the Generals in the win over Dickinson, posting seven kills. Sophomore outside hitter Stacey Kimmel (San Antonio, Texas/Alamo Heights) added six kills and nine digs.
In W&LÕs second match with Mary Washington, Shelton led the team with 16 kills, while Ruckert totaled 11 kills and nine digs. Kimmel notched 15 digs and Saulsbury contributed 23 assists.
Washington and Lee will return to action on Wednesday as it hosts Sweet Briar in an ODAC contest. The match is slated to begin at 6:30 pm.
