LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee went on an 18-4 run over the final eight minutes of the first half en route to a 77-59 victory over the visiting Blue Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan College on Sunday evening.
W&L's inside duo of sophomores Megan Babst (Pittsburgh, Pa/Fox Chapel Area) and Jessica Mentz (Ellicott City, Md/Centennial) controlled play in the paint while senior guard Jessica Morton (Midlothian, Va./Clover Hill) provided a scoring threat from the perimeter. Mentz led the Generals (5-2, 3-1 ODAC) with a game and season-high 24 points and 15 rebounds. Babst recorded her fifth double-double of the year with 16 points and 17 rebounds. Morton chipped in 19 points, matching her season-high.
Virginia Wesleyan (2-5, 1-3 ODAC) was led by junior forward Erin Duckett (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) who, with 15 points, was the only Blue Marlin in double figures. Junior forward Kristin Leake (Richmond, Va./J.R. Tucker) tallied eight points and a team-high eight rebounds in the contest.
For the game, the Generals connected on 22-of-25 free throw attempts for a season-high 88 percent. W&L also hit 41.5 percent of its shots from the floor while holding Virginia Wesleyan to just over 31 percent. The Generals outrebounded the Blue Marlins 54-40.
W&L will return to action on January 6, when it travels to Hollins University. The game is set to begin at 7:00 pm.
