LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men's soccer team claimed its first ODAC victory of the season on Thursday with an exciting 2-1 win over Hampden-Sydney.
Senior forward Jamie Parker (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland) opened the scoring just 3:46 into the match when he slipped the ball past Hampden-Sydney senior goalkeeper Mike Bizon (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic). The Tigers quickly rallied to tie the score at 1-1 when senior forward Trey Cooper (Va. Beach, Va./Norfolk Collegiate) tallied what proved to be Hampden-Sydney's only goal of the game at the 16:51 mark. Each team had numerous chances, but neither capitalized again until the waning seconds of the match when sophomore midfielder Jon Stroebel (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) notched the game winner for W&L. Stroebel gave the Generals (2-4, 1-2 ODAC) the victory when he knocked in a pass from sophomore forward Andrew Grimes (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) with only :17 left on the clock. On the game, W&L outshot the Tigers (5-3, 2-1 ODAC) by a count of 12-9.
For their next game, the Generals will travel to Christopher Newport on Saturday, October 2. Gametime is set for 1:00 pm.
