MARYVILLE, Tenn. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team went 1-1 in the opening round of the Maryville Invitational Friday evening. The Generals were defeated by Savannah College of Art and Design, 9-15, 15-9, 16-14, 11-15, 21-23, then downed Eastern Mennonite, 16-18, 15-8, 15-10, 10-15, 15-10.
In the loss to SCAD, W&L was led by senior outside hitter Nancy Reinhart (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart), who totaled 12 kills and 26 digs. Sophomore middle blocker Lindsay Ruckert (Metairie, La./Sacred Heart) tallied 17 kills, four aces, and 14 digs, while junior setter Katherine Kline (Potomac, Md./Holton-Arms) amassed a team-high 34 assists. Junior setter Pam Saulsbury (Ridgely, Md./North Caroline) also added 21 assists on the evening.
In the win over EMU, Ruckert led the Generals (7-2) with 16 kills and 18 digs. Reinhart totaled 10 kills and 12 digs, while Kline collected 31 assists. Saulsbury added 23 assists and five aces.
W&L is in action again on Saturday afternoon in the final day of the tournament before returning home to take on Randolph-Macon Woman's College on Tuesday evening. Gametime is set for 6:30 pm.
