LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women's soccer team lost its season opener this afternoon to Emory University 3-0.
Emory (3-0-1) controlled the tempo throughout the contest and outshot the Generals (0-1) 23 to four. Washington and LeeÕs goaltenders stopped the Eagles on numerous scoring opportunites and kept the Generals in the contest. Senior Stephanie McKnight (Frederick, Md./Frederick) and junior Lauren Harris (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hill) kept the game tied through the gameÕs 75th minute. Harris and McKnight combined to make 17 saves for the Generals.
W&L, however, could not hold off the Eagles late in the second half. Emory scored three goals in a span of less than two minutes to take a 3-0 lead and clinch the victory. The first of the three goals was tallied by Megan Connolly in the 78th minute. The second goal came just a minute later on a shot by Sarah Fairchild. Fairchild then netted the clincher with less than 10 minutes remaining in the match.
W&L endured another major loss Saturday, losing senior captain Deirdre Coyle (Belle Meade, NJ./Montgomery) for the season when she broke her leg just five minutes into the game.
The Generals will look to regroup against Shenandoah University at the Liberty Hall Fields on Sunday, September 12 at 2:30 PM.
