LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee's women's basketball team (9-10, 8-7 ODAC) let a 12-point second half lead slip away and had its five-game winning streak snapped in the process of losing to Guilford (9-10, 9-7 ODAC), 83-70 at the Warner Center on Saturday afternoon. The Quakers avenged an earlier 63-61 loss to W&L on Jan. 30, in which the Generals rallied from an 18-point deficit to win.
The Generals jumped out to an early eight-point lead (25-17) with 5:13 left in the first half and carried that same eight-point lead (37-29) into halftime.
W&L built the lead to 12 (47-35) with 16:55 left in the game. The Quakers then went on a 24-6 run in the next 8:41 to take a 59-53 lead with 8:04 left to go. The Generals cut the lead to one (61-60) with 5:31 left, but the rest of the game belonged to Guilford, as the Quakers cruised to the 13-point victory.
Freshman center Jessica Mentz (Ellicott City, Md./ Centennial) paced the Generals with 20 points on 8-of-10 shooting. Senior forward Chrissy Burghardt (Rockaway, N.J./ Morris Hills) posted a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman forwar d Megan Babst (Pittsburgh, Pa./ Fox Chapel Area) chipped in with 8 points, ten rebounds, and four blocked shots.
The Quakers were paced by sophomore guard Kerrie Campbell (Greensboro, N.C./ Grimsley), who scored 20 points off the bench. Freshman guard Erin Beacham (Atlanta, Ga./ The Lovett School) chipped in with 19 points. Sophomore forward Arden Miller (Landenb erg, Pa./ Sanford School) scored 18 points, also off the bench.
The Generals will look to get back on the winning track when they host Bridgewater on Tuesday night at the Warner Center. The Eagles won the previous meeting, 70-53 at Bridgewater on Jan. 19.
