LEXINGTON, Va. -- Sophomore guard Joel Kauffman (Baxter, Ky./Harlan) scored a game-high 27 points, including nine in overtime to help lift Eastern Mennonite to an 84-78 overtime win over W&L in ODAC men's basketball on Saturday evening at the Warner Center.
Kauffman was 17-of-18 from the free throw line in the contest, hitting four charity tosses in the final six seconds of overtime to nail down the victory.
The Generals (5-15, 4-10) trailed just 79-78 with 49 seconds remaining in the extra session and had two cracks to take the lead, but neither were true. Then, sophomore center Neal Lewis (Glen Allen, Va./Benedictine) gathered the second missed shot and wa s fouled by W&L freshman forward Bob Bustamante (Miami, Fla./Christopher Columbus). W&L senior guard Kevin Cobbin (Jacksonville, Fla./Bolles School) was also hit with a double technical foul on the play, sending Kauffman to the line with the opportunity to nail the door shut for EMU (12-8, 8-6).
W&L sent the game to overtime, when sophomore forward Will Ballard (Elkin, N.C./Elkin) tied the game at 68-68 on a three-pointer with six seconds remaining.
Junior forward Quincy Longacre (Telford, Pa./Christopher Dock) also had 17 points and nine rebounds for EMU.
W&L was led by sophomore guard Chad Braley (Huntington, W.Va./Paul Blazer) who scored 17 points and Ballard, who tallied 15 points.
The Generals will be in action again on Monday, when they travel to Randolph-Macon for a 7:30 pm contest.
