LEXINGTON, Va. -- Senior center Jason Nickerson (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) scored a game-high 26 points on 8-of-11 shooting and grabbed 10 rebounds to help lead Virginia Wesleyan to an 80-71 victory over Washington and Lee in ODAC Men's Basketball o n Wednesday evening at the Warner Center.
The Marlins (15-4, 10-3) shot 57.1 percent for the game, including 66.7 percent in the second half, while outrebounding the Generals (5-14, 4-9) 30-23.
After trailing 39-30 at the half and despite VWC's hot shooting, W&L was able to take a two-point lead (56-54) with 8:23 remaining in the game on a pair of free throws by junior forward Scott Hudson (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge). However, Virginia Wesleyan would surge on a 10-1 run over the next 3:10 to assume a seven-point lead (64-57) that they would not relinquish.
Junior guard Tim Petrillo (Woodbury, N.J./West Deptford) and senior forward Troy Walton (St. Johnsbury, Vt./St. Johnsbury) joined Nickerson in double-figure scoring for VWC, adding 17 and 11 points, respectively.
Sophomore forward Will Ballard (Elkin, N.C./Elkin) led W&L with 13 points and three assists. Hudson tallied 12 points and senior guard Kevin Cobbin (Jacksonville, Fla./Bolles School) added 11 points.
W&L will be in action again on Saturday, when it hosts Eastern Mennonite in a 7:30 pm game.
