SALEM, Va. -- Randolph-Macon (23-3, 19-1) ended Washington Lee's magical season on Friday afternoon, defeating the Generals (13-13, 11-9) 56-36 in the semifinal round of the ODAC Women's Basketball Tournament at the Salem Civic Center.
The Generals were ice cold from the floor in the first half, shooting only 19.2 percent (5-of-26), but the defense kept W&L in the game as they cut a 15-point R-MC lead to 12 at halftime (24-12).
W&L came out red hot in the second half, scoring the first 12 points and knotting the contest at 24-24 with 13:31 remaining in the game. The Yellow Jackets did not score in the second half until junior forward Bren Elliott hit a layup with 13:06 remaining in the game. The Yellow Jackets stretched their lead to 11 (39-28) with 6:38 left, before the Generals made one last run to cut the lead to five (40-35) with 4:42 remaining. Randolph-Macon then went on a 16-1 run to roll to 20-point win.
The Generals were led by freshman center Megan Babst (Pittsburgh, Pa./ Fox Chapel Area), who scored nine points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Freshman center Jessica Mentz (Ellicott City, Md./ Centennial) scored eight points and grabbed seven rebounds. Senior forward Chrissy Burghardt (Rockaway, N.J./ Morris Hills) scored six points and grabbed nine rebounds in her final game in a W&L uniform. She ends her career with 1,080 career points, the program's all-time leading scorer.
The Yellow Jackets were led by senior guard Aimee Beightol, junior center Renee Zando, and sophomore forward Jamie Tanner, who all scored 11 points a piece.
W&L ends the season with the most overall wins (13) and ODAC wins (11) in school history. The semifinal appearance was the first in the programUs history.
