Washington and Lee (11-12, 10-9 ODAC) clinched its first non-losing Old Dominion Athletic Conference season by winning at Hollins University (1-21, 0-18 ODAC), 71-52 on in women's college basketball action on Monday evening.
The Generals fell behind 9-0 with 16:13 left in the first half and 13-4 with 12:50 remaining. W&L then went on a 27-8 run during the remainder of the half to take a 31-21 lead into halftime.
Hollins cut the lead to four (40-36) with 13:14 left in the game, but the Generals outscored HU 31-16 after that point to cruise to the 19-point victory.
W&L was led on Monday evening by a trio of freshmen who rotated between the forward and center positions. Jessica Mentz (Ellicott City, Md./ Centennial) recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Megan Babst (P ittsburgh, Pa./ Fox Chapel Area) tied a career high with 11 points. Leslie Fischbeck (Pittsburgh, Pa./ Woodland Hills) set career highs in points (10) and rebounds (9). Hollins was led by senior guard Tanya Holmes (Roanoke, Va./ Northside), who scored 24 points on seven three-pointers.
The Generals shot a staggering 15-of-16 (93.8 percent) from the free throw line. The mark sets a program high for free throw percentage in a game. Nine different Generals found their ways into the scoring column on the evening.
W&L can clinch the fifth seed in next weekUs ODAC tournament with a win on Wednesday night, when they travel to Eastern Mennonite for their regular season finale. Tip-off will be at 7:00. The Generals beat the Royals in their first meeting at the W arner Center, 71-41 on Jan. 7.
