SALEM, Va. -- Washington and Lee (10-12, 9-9) cut arch-rival Roanoke's lead from 18 to six, but could get no closer as the Maroons prevailed, 74-65 in ODAC women's basketball action at the Bast Center on Saturday evening.
Roanoke (19-3, 17-1) took a quick 25-7 lead with 8:15 left in the first half. The Generals trimmed that lead to as little as eight (28-20) with 3:53 left in the half. The Maroons built the lead back up to 12 (37-25) by halftime.
The Maroons built the lead to 17 (47-30) with 15:11 left in the game. W&L cut the lead to as little as six on several occasions, but could get no closer, as the Maroons hit their free throws down the stretch and came out with the nine-point win.
Freshman center Jessica Mentz (Ellicott City, Md./ Centennial) led the Generals in scoring, with 19 points and rebounding, with nine boards. Each of Mentz's points were scored in the final 12 minutes of the contest. Her 15th point of the day was her 33 8th point of the season, giving her more points in one season than any player in the history of the program. Junior guard Jessica Morton (Midlothian, Va./ Clover Hill) scored 15 points for the Generals, while freshman guard Alison Kudlacik (Manalapan, N. J ./ Manalpan) scored 11.
The Maroons were led by junior guard Toree Morris (Salem, Va./ Salem), who scored 16 points, with four three-pointers to her credit.
W&L will travel to Hollins University for a 7:00 contest on Monday night. The Generals defeated Hollins, 76-59 in their first contest on Jan. 14 at the Warner Center.
