W&L Comes Back Late to Beat Lycnburg, 56-52

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Junior center Rich Peterson (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) posted a double-double with 16 points and a career-high 14 rebounds to help lead Washington and Lee to a 56-52 win over Lynchburg in ODAC basketball on Wednesday evening at the Warner Center.

The Generals led by as many as eight points (26-18) in the opening half with 4:31 remaining. However, the Hornets (4-18, 3-13) would cut the W&L lead to just four points (32-28) at the half.

In the opening 7:05 of the second half, Lynchburg surged on a 20-9 run to take a seven-point lead at 48-41, but the Generals would outscore the Hornets 15-4 the rest of the way to post the win.

The victory, coupled with a Bridgewater loss to Randolph-Macon, puts the Generals in a tie with the Eagles for seventh place in the ODAC standings.

Sophomore forward Will Ballard (Elkin, N.C./Elkin) also added 16 points and four rebounds for the Generals (6-16, 5-11).

The Hornets were led by junior guard Chris Whelan (Great Falls, Va./Herndon), who scored 13 points and junior guard Jerry O'Hara (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield), who scored 12 points.

The Generals will be in action again on Saturday when they travel to Salem, Va., for a 7:30 pm contest with arch-rival Roanoke College.
