W&L Women Drop Catholic, 73-62

LEXINGTON, Va. --The Washington and Lee University women's basketball team survived a scare by the Catholic Cardinals at home tonight, but held on to win, 73-62. When trailing 52-48 with 7:17 remaining in the game, W&L went on a 17-2 run to clinch their fourth victory of the season.

W&L's inside tandem of sophomore Megan Babst (Pittsburgh, Pa/Fox Chapel Area) and sophomore Jessica Mentz (Ellicott City, Md/Centennial) controlled play in the paint late in the game and led the Generals (4-2) to the win. Babst tallied 18 points and 12 rebounds, while Mentz added 15 points and nine boards. Senior co-captains Ansley Miller (Athens, Ga./Athens Academy) and Jessica Morton (Midlothian, Va./Clover Hill) added ten points apiece in the backcourt for W&L.

Catholic (2-4) was led by guard Meg Hagarty who scored a game high 25 points including three 3-pointers. Center Carol Schnepp added 16 points to mount the Cardinals' charge.

Catholic only connected on 37 percent of their shots from the floor, whileW&L made 40 percent of their field goals. The difference proved to be performance from the free-throw line as the Generals made 73 percent of their free-throws, while Catholic only connected 42 percent of the time from the charity stripe.

W&L will return to action on January 2, when it hosts Virginia Wesleyan. The game is set to begin at 5:00 pm.
