Hampden-Sydney Defeats W&L, 84-59, in ODAC Men's Basketball

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Top-ranked Hampden-Sydney used a balanced scoring attack, placing six players in double-figures in defeating Washington and Lee, 84-59, in ODAC men's basketball on Wednesday evening at the Warner Center.

The Tigers (5-0, 1-0) led by just five points (18-13) with 10:21 remaining in the opening half before surging on a 20-2 run over the next 7:26 to take a commanding 38-15 lead in posting a 43-23 halftime advantage.

The Generals (1-3, 1-1) cut Hampden-Sydney's lead to just 11 points (59-48) with 9:01 remaining but could get no closer as the Tigers cruised to the 25-point victory, its closest margin of victory on the season.

Junior center Jeremy Harris (Farmville, Va./Fork Union) led Hampden-Sydney in scoring with 12 points. He was joined in double-figures by junior forward Jack Jirak (Lexington, Ky./Lexington Christian), junior guard T.J. Grimes (Onancock, Va./Nandua), and senior guard Alex Robbins (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) who scored 11 points each. Junior guard Chris Fox (Hampton, Va./Hampton) and sophomore forward Brett Thompson (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin) added 10 points a piece.

Washington and Lee was led by sophomore guard Chad Braley (Huntington, W.Va./Paul Blazer), who scored 17 points and junior center Rich Peterson (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull), who had 15 points and five assists.

W&L will return to action on Dec. 5-6, when it hosts the W&L 250th Celebration Tournament. The Generals will face Middlebury College on Dec. 5 at 3:30 pm. Other teams participating in the tournament will be Skidmore and Washington University. They will meet on Dec. 5 at 1:00 pm. The consolation game will take place on Dec. 6 at 1:00 pm, with the championship game being played at 3:30 pm.
