LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women's basketball team opened its conference schedule Wednesday night with a 76-59 victory over visiting Lynchburg College.
The Generals (2-1, 1-0 ODAC) led 26-15 with eight and a half minutes remaining in the first half, when the Hornets (1-3, 0-1 ODAC) took advantage of the Generals' foul trouble and scored 12 unanswered points to take the lead 27-26 with three and a half minutes left in the half. W&L managed to regain the lead by halftime, 36-33. After falling behing 37-36 at the start of the second half, W&L outscored Lynchburg 33-10 over a span of 13 minutes to take a commanding lead which it did not relinquish.
The Generals were led by sophomore center Megan Babst (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel Area) and sophomore forward Jessica Mentz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) both of whom tallied double-doubles. Babst tallied 14 points, 14 rebounds, and a school-record six blocks, while Mentz added 11 points and pulled down 12 boards. Senior guard Jessica Morton (Midlothian, Va./Clover Hill) led the Generals in scoring with 19 points. She also chipped in four rebounds and three assists. Also in double figures for W&L was senior captain Ansley Miller (Athens, Ga./Athens Academy) with 10 points.
Lynchburg was led by sophomore guard Lehticia Deskins who scored a game-high 20 points, along with five rebounds and four assists. Mindy Hohin and Johari Bass each scored 8 points for the Hornets.
The Generals will take on Eastern Mennonite on Friday, December 3, at 7:00 pm in Lexington.
