ROANOKE, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women's volleyball team claimed its first-ever bid to the NCAA Tournament by defeating Roanoke College 15-12, 15-8, 15-7 in the finals of the ODAC Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Hollins University. The title is the third consecutive ODAC championship for W&L.
The Generals (22-6) earned a spot in the finals with a 12-15, 15-7, 15-9, 15-5 victory over Emory & Henry in the semifinals on Saturday morning. In the match against the Wasps, W&L was led by senior outside hitter Nancy Reinhart (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart) who tallied 13 kills, four aces, and 19 digs. ODAC Player-of-the-Year Lindsay Ruckert (Metairie, La./Sacred Heart) chipped in 21 kills and 13 digs for the Generals. Junior setter Katherine Kline (Potomac, Md./Holton Arms) led W&L with 30 set assists.
In the finals against the Maroons, Ruckert, the Tournament MVP, paced the Generals with 23 kills, three blocks, and eight digs. Sophomore outside-hitter Lee Charbonnet (New Orleans, La./Ben Franklin) chipped in 11 kills, four aces, and eight digs. Reinhart added 12 kills and 11 digs, while Kline and junior setter Pam Saulsbury (Ridgely, Md./North Caroline) combined for 49 set assists.
Due to their stellar play over the weekend, Ruckert and Reinhart were honored as selections to the All-Tournament team. W&L will find out its NCAA pairing on Sunday afternoon when the tournament brackets are released.
