GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Trailing by as many as eight points late in the first half, W&L used a 14-4 run to start the second half and take a five point lead with 14:32 remaining in cruising to a 67-55 win over Guilford in the ODAC opener for both teams.
The Generals (1-2, 1-0) were led offensively by junior forward Rich Peterson (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull), who scored a game-high 16 points on six-of-eight shooting and hauled in eight rebounds. Matt Jackson (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) tallied 13 points and sophomore Chad Braley (Huntington, W.Va./Paul Blazer) scored 11 points, nine coming on three-pointers. Senior point guard Kevin Cobbin (Jacksonville, Fla./Bolles School) tied a career record with seven assists.
Sophomore forward Jon Evans led Guilford (0-2, 0-1) with 14 points and five rebounds. He was joined in double figures by sophomore center John Ashworth, who tallied 13 points and eight rebounds.
The Generals will return to action on December 2, when they host Hampden-Sydney in a 7:30 pm contest. The Tigers were picked as the number one team in Division III by several publications in the preseason.
