WELLESLEY, Mass. -- The Washington and Lee women's basketball team opened its season over the weekend by competing in the Wellesley Invitational Basketball Tournament. The Generals were defeated in the opening round by Wellesley (2-0), 71-53. W&L took the lead early in the contest, but the Blue rallied for a 34-27 lead at the break which they would not relinquish. Leading the Generals in scoring were senior guard Jessica Morton (Midlothian, Va./Clover Hill), and sophomore forward Jessica Mentz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial), with 14 points apiece. Amy Barao led Wellesley with 13 points.
In the consolation final, W&L (1-1) rallied for its first victory of the young season, triumphing over the Wildcats of Randolph-Macon Woman's College by a score of 60-49. Sophomore guard Carter Thomas (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) led W&L with a career-high 17 points. Also providing scoring punch for the Generals were sophomore guard Sarah Schmidt (Topeka, Kan./Hayden) and sophomore center Megan Babst (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel), posting 12 and 11 points, respectively. Babst also tallied a career-high 19 rebounds to lead the Generals on the boards. Tara Carleton led RMWC (0-2) with 17 points and nine rebounds.
W&L will take the week off for Thanksgiving break before returning to the court on December 1 in Lexington against ODAC foe Lynchburg College. Gametime is slated for 7:00 pm.
