W&L Ends Season With 4-3 Double Overtime Loss To Roanoke

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The No. 4 seeded Washington and Lee men's soccer team ended its season with a heartbreaking 4-3 double-overtime loss to the Maroons of Roanoke College in the first round of the ODAC men's soccer tournament on Wednesday in Lexington, Va.

Roanoke (8-8-2), seeded fifth, jumped ahead early on a penalty kick goal by Adam Birch just 1:20 into the match. The Maroons extended their lead to 2-0 when Ryan Pflugrad scored on a 10-yard shot at the 8:47 mark. W&L then caught fire, scoring three unanswered goals to take a 3-2 lead. Jon Wilson (Newport News, Va./Hampton Roads) scored first for the Generals off an assist from sophomore midfielder Paul Wallace (Roanoke, Va./Patrick Henry) at the 26:26 mark. Senior forward Jamie Parker (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland) scored the next two goals for W&L, the first coming on a penalty kick with 12:45 left in the half. The next goal came only 2:22 later off a pass from Wilson. The lead proved to be short lived as Regi Francois tied the game at the 40:23 mark, beating W&L freshman goalkeeper Tim Foley (Darnestown, Md./Georgetown Prep).

Neither team was able to score again until Andy Newton corraled a deflected ball in front of the W&L net and tallied the game-winner with 8:13 left in the second overtime.

With the win, Roanoke advances to meet No. 8 seeded Eastern Mennonite in the ODAC Semifinals on Friday at Hampden-Sydney. W&L ends its season with an overall record of 9-8.
