W&L Splits With Gettysburg In Swimming

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee hosted Gettysburg College in a dual swim meet on Sunday afternoon. The Generals claimed a 137-106 upset victory in the men's competition, while the W&L women's squad suffered its first loss of the season by a score of 142-100.

The W&L men's team was paced by freshman Patrick Frankfort (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) who claimed three individual victories. Frankfort swam his way to victories in the 400 yard IM (4:29.41), 100 yard backstroke (56.89), and the 500 yard freestyle (4:53.15). W&L also had two double-winners in junior Colin Hayes (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) and junior Mike Miraglia (Rockville, Md./Rockville). Hayes claimed wins in the 200 yard butterfly (2:01.15) and the 100-yard butterfly (53.32). Other individual winners for the Generals were senior Ken Ervin (Florence, S.C./Asheville School) in the 50-yard freestyle (22.32) and junior Rob Little (Fort Mill, S.C./Mercersburg Academy) in the 200-yard backstroke (2:04.99). The W&L men also claimed wins in both the 200-freestyle relay (1:30.50) and 200-yard medley relay (1:41.78). On the day, W&L set nine new meet records in the men's competition.

For the women's squad, sophomore Katie Kennedy (Delran, N.J./Delran) claimed two victories. Kennedy won the100-yard breaststroke (1:09.54) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:29.07). Also winning events for the women's team were freshman Blair Huffman (Roanoke, Va./North Cross), freshman Kelli Austin (Niles, Mich./Niles), and senior Lauren Beckenhauer (Grosse Point, Mich./Grosse Pt. South). Huffman won the 200-yard butterfly (2:17.74), Austin swam her way to a win in the 100-yard freestyle (56.59), and Beckenhauer claimed the 100-yard backstroke (1:04.72).

Both W&L squads will return to action when they travel to Swarthmore College on Saturday, November 20, to take on the Garnet Tide. The meet is scheduled to begin at 2:00 pm.
