EMORY, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women's basketball team won its fourth game in a row by defeating Emory & Henry, 56-55, in ODAC women's basketball on Saturday afternoon. The four-game win streak is a new program record.
The game was tight throughout before the Wasps (6-11, 6-7) took a 53-47 lead with 3:22 remaining in the game. However, W&L then went on a 7-0 run capped by a layup by freshman center Jessica Mentz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) to take a 54-53 adv antage with 35 seconds left.
Emory & Henry then took a one-point lead at 55-54 on a layup by freshman forward Erin Kyle (Galax, Va./Galax) with 34 ticks remaining, before Mentz hit another layup with 13 seconds left to give the Generals (8-9, 7-6) a 56-55 lead. Emory & Hen ry then tu rned the ball over with two seconds remaining and W&L walked away with the win.
Mentz led the Generals in scoring with 17 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the floor. Freshman guard Sarah Schmidt (Topeka, Kan./Hayden) added eight points and freshman center Megan Babst (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) chipped in with seven points. Senior forward Chrissy Burghardt (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) scored four points and is just 10 points away from becoming the first W&L women's basketball player to break the 1,000 career point barrier.
Suzanne Groseclose (North Tazwell, Va./Tazwell) led Emory & Henry with 12 points.
The Generals will be in action again on Tue., Jan. 2, when they host Randolph-Macon Women's College in a 7:00 pm contest.
