GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Washington and Lee women's basketball team overcame an 18-point first half deficit to earn its first-ever win over ODAC-rival Guilford, 63-61, on Saturday afternoon.
W&L (5-9, 4-6) trailed 33-15 with 4:20 remaining in the first half, but fought back to cut the Quakers' lead to 42-28 at halftime before surmounting an incredible comeback.
The Generals came out in the begining of the second half and went on an 11-4 run to cut the deficit to just seven points (46-39) before Guilford retaliated and built the lead back to 13 points at 54-41 with 9:47 remaining.
From that point, W&L held Guilford to just seven points while scoring 22 itself to take the victory. Down 58-55 with 4:11 remaining, freshman guard Alison Kudlacik (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) hit her third three-pointer of the game to knot the scor e at 5 8-58. Following a Guilford three-pointer and three made free throws by the Generals that tied the score at 61-61, freshman guard Berry Lowden (Rome, Ga./Darlington School) nailed the winning basket on a layup with 28 seconds remaining.
The Generals shot 54.5 percent from the floor in the second half and held the Quakers (6-8, 5-5) to just 22.6 percent shooting in the second stanza in producing its first win in 10 tries against Guilford.
Kudlacik led W&L in scoring with a career-high 21 points on 7-for-11 shooting, while fellow classmate Jessica Mentz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) tallied 16 points. Senior forward Chrissy Burghardt (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) scored eight point s and grabbed 10 rebounds.
Freshman guard Erin Beacham (Atlanta, Ga./Lovett School) led Guilford with 18 points.
W&L will be in action again on Tue., Jan.26, when it hosts Virginia Wesleyan in a 7:00 pm contest.
