NORFOLK, Va. -- Senior guard Bridget Smith (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) scored a game-high 24 points to help lead Virginia Wesleyan to an 85-75 win over Washington and Lee in ODAC women's basketball on Saturday evening.
Trailing 48-38 at the break, the Generals (1-6, 0-3) staged a furious comeback to cut the Marlins lead to just four points on several occasions in the second half, but W&L couldn't get over the hump as VWC (3-3, 2-1) earned the 10-point win.
Freshman center Jessica Mentz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) led four Generals in double-figures with 17 points. Senior forward Chrissy Burghardt (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) tallied a double-double with16 points and 10 rebounds, junior guard Jessica Morton (Midlothian, Va./Clover Hill) scored 13 points and freshman guard Alison Kudlacik (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) scored 12 points.
The Generals will be in action again on Thursday, Jan. 7, when they host Eastern Mennonite in a 7:30 pm contest.
