LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Washington and Lee (3-9, 2-5) let a seven-point second half lead slip away in falling at Lynchburg College (2-9, 1-4) by a score of 72-60 in ODAC men's basketball action on Wednesday night.
The Generals held a 27-24 lead at halftime and pumped the lead to seven (33-26) with 16:48 left in the game. However, the Hornets went on a furious 21-5 run to turn a nine-point deficit into a 47-38 lead with 7:56 left. Lynchburg went up by 18 at 61-43 with 3:47 left. The Generals made the game interesting, by cutting the lead to 66-60 with 43 seconds left, but Lynchburg scored the final six points of the game.
W&L was led by junior center Rich Peterson (Trumbull, Conn./ Trumbull), who scored 12 points. Sophomore guard Will Ballard (Elkin, N.C./ Elkin) and junior center Brian Ricketts (Memphis, Tenn./ M.U.S.) both chipped in with 10 points apiece. Junior center Scott Hudson (Basking Ridge, N.J./ Ridge) scored nine points and grabbed 11 rebounds.
Lynchburg was led by forward Dennis Brown, who scored 25 points and guard Chris Whelan, who scored 18 points.
The Generals outrebounded Lynchburg 43-36, but the Hornets shot 45 percent from the field, compared to 33 percent for W&L.
W&L will look to snap its five-game losing streak on Saturday afternoon, when it hosts Randolph-Macon at the Warner Center. Tip-off will be at 3:00.
