GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Washington and Lee gained 351 yards of total offense but turned the ball over five times (two interceptions, three fumbles) in losing their ODAC-opener to Guilford Saturday afternoon.
The Quakers took an early 6-0 lead in the first quarter when freshman quarterback Brian Foulks scored on a one-yard keeper with 1:08 remaining. However, the Generals (0-2, 0-1) battled back to take a 7-6 lead with 10:59 left in the second stanza on a one -yard plunge by sophomore tailback Marc Watson (Marietta, Ga./Walton).
After another Guilford (2-0, 1-0) tally and subsequent missed PAT, W&L assumed a 13-12 halftime lead on an eight-yard scoring strike from junior quarterback Christian Batcheller (Stuart, Va./Patrick County) to junior wide-out J.T. Malatesta (Washington, D .C./Landon) with :07 remaining in the half. The Generals attempt at a two-point conversion failed.
Guilford opened the third quarter scoring when senior running back Dwayne Cherry scored on a four-yard scamper with 9:03 remaining in the period and a two-point conversion lifted the Quakers to a 20-13 lead.
Just 1:57 later, W&L knotted the game at 20-20 when Batcheller scored on a 20-yard quarterback keeper, but that would not be enough as Cherry scored another TD on a 35-yard run with 8:52 left in the fourth to produce the 27-20 win for Guilford.
W&L had one last chance to even the game up or take the lead, taking the ball over on the Quakers' 49-yard line with :31 seconds remaining, but several passing attempts in the end zone fell short as time expired.
Cherry rushed for 153 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries for Guilford. Watson paced the Generals ground attack with 61 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries and Batcheller got things done through the air, completing 15-of-26 passes for 194 yards and on e touchdown.
W&L next plays Centre College on Saturday, September 26 in Danville, Ky. The Colonels are also 0-2 on the season.
