LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee's women's basketball team (1-2, 0-1 ODAC) staged a furious comeback on Tuesday night at the Warner Center, cutting a 14-point Randolph Macon (2-2, 1-0 ODAC) lead to just two with 48 seconds left to play. However , the Yellow Jackets scored the final four points of the game to hold on to a 65-59 victory.
Randolph-Macon led through most of first half and by as many as seven points, but the Generals cut the lead to 35-30 by halftime. The Yellow Jackets then went on a 15-6 run in the first 9:18 of the second half to take a 50-36 lead. However, the General s surged on a 23-11 run in the next 9:54 to cut the lead to two before Randolph-Macon put the game away.
The Generals were paced by four players, who scored in double figures. Senior forward Chrissy Burghardt (Rockaway, N.J./ Morris Hills) posted a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman center Jessica Mentz (Ellicott City, Md./ Centennial) posted 14 points and eight rebounds. Freshman guard Alison Kudlacik (Manalapan, N.J./ Manalapan) scored a career-high 11 points, while senior guard Ansley Miller (Athens, Ga./ Athens Academy) chipped in with 10.
The Yellow Jackets were led by senior guard Aimee Beightol (Roanoke, Va./ Cave Spring), who scored 16 points. Junior center Renee Zando (Yorktown, Va./ Tabb) posted a double-double with 14 points and 15 rebounds.
The Generals will return to action on Friday evening at 8:30, when they host Middlebury College in the first round of the Washington and Lee 250th Celebration Tournament. Defending national champion Washington University of St. Louis as well as perenni al power Skidmore College will also participate in the two-day tournament.
