LEXINGTON, Va. -- Trailing 20-6 in the fourth quarter, 14th-ranked Emory & Henry scored 17 points in the final 10:14 of the game to post its 16th-straight victory over Washington & Lee, 23-20.
The Wasps (9-0, 5-0) comeback started with W&L on its own one yard line with 6:02 remaining in the contest. W&L junior punter Doug Williams (Rome, Ga./Darlington) intentionally stepped out of the end zone to take a safety, making the score 20-8 in favor of the Generals.
On the ensuing E&H drive, the Wasps scored on a 41-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Tom Crigger (Vansant, Va./Grundy) to junior wide receiver David Miller (Alexandria, Va./Thomas Edison) with 3:28 remaining to cut the Generals lead to 20-15.
W&L was forced to punt after four plays on its next possession and Emory & Henry took over on its own 20 yard line with 1:36 remaining. The Wasps then drove to the 34 yard line with :35 left, but were facing a fourth-and-10 play. On the play, Crigger dropped back and lofted a pass to Miller, who hauled the ball in and fell into the end zone to make the score 21-20, Emory & Henry. The Wasps were then successful on a two-point conversion and walked away with a 23-20 win.
Junior running back Oliver Jordan (Clifton Forge, Va./Allegheny) rushed for a game-high 126 yards to pace the E&H offense. Crigger completed seven-of-18 attempts for 174 yards and two touchdowns. Miller caught two passes for 75 yards and two scores.
W&L was led by junior quarterback Christian Batcheller (Stuart, Va./Patrick County), who completed 19-of-29 attempts for 207 yards and one touchdown. Sophomore running back Marc Watson (Marietta, Ga./Walton) rushed for 96 yards and senior tight end David Ritchey (McLean, Va./Langley) hauled in five passes for 86 yards, including a 32-yard touchdown reception in the third quarter to give the Generals a 13-6 lead.
Defensively, the Generals (3-6, 1-4) were led a pair of brothers in senior linebacker Brad Baker (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) and sophomore defensive back Will Baker (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook). Brad totaled 16 tackles and Will amassed 13 tack les, a fumble recovery for a touchdown (21 yards) and one interception.
The Emory & Henry defense was led by junior defensive back Tyronn Peterson (Stone Mountain, Ga./Redan), who had 13 stops and one interception.
W&L will conclude its 1998 schedule on November 14, when it travels to Swarthmore College for a 1:00 pm contest.
