SEWANEE, Tenn. -- The Washington and Lee men's basketball team opened its season with a pair of losses in the Lon Vardell Classic hosted by Sewanee on November 20-21. The Generals dropped their opener against Sewanee, 91-73, and then were defeated by Maryville, 79-64, in the consolation game.
Sewanee was crowned the champion of the tournament, defeating Methodist in the title game.
Against Sewanee, the Generals shot just 38.6 percent from the floor, while the Tigers drilled 55.4 percent of their shots.
Junior guard Matt Jackson (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) paced W&L is scoring with 21 points on 7-of-13 shooting. Sophomore guard Chad Braley (Huntington, W.Va./Paul Blazer) drilled five three-pointers in his W&L debut, scoring 20 points. Peter Jones led Sewanee with 18 points and six rebounds.
In the consolation game against Maryville, the Generals shot much better from the floor (46.9%), but couldn't contain the Fighting Scots, who shot 59.2 percent from the floor and hit 53 percent of their three-pointers.
Junior forward Rich Peterson (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) led W&L in scoring with 18 points, followed by junior center Brian Ricketts (Memphis, Tenn./Memphis University School), who had 11 points and a team-high four rebounds. Chris Houseright notched 22 points to lead Maryville.
The Generals will be in action again on Tuesday, November 24, when they travel to Greensboro, N.C., to face Guilford College in an ODAC contest. Gametime is set for 7:30 pm.
