Shenandoah Slips By W&L In Women's Basketball Opener; 62-53

Lexington, Va. -- Washington and Lee's women's basketball team held a six-point advantage with 8:44 remaining against Shenandoah on Friday night. However, the Generals could not hold it as Shenandoah came out on top by a 62-53 score at the Warner C enter. The game was the season opener for both teams.

Shenandoah got out to an early 20-13 lead with 3:50 remaining in the first half, but W&L was able to narrow the lead to 25-21 at halftime. The Generals outscored Shenandoah 25-15 in the first 11:56 of the second half to give W&L a six-point lea d. The Hornets then went on an 8-1 run and led 54-53 with 2:34 remaining in the game. Shenandoah scored the final eight points of the game to take the 62-53 victory.

The Generals were led by freshman center Jessica Mentz (Ellicott City, Md./ Centennial) who had a spectacular debut, scoring a double-double with 18 points and 14 rebounds. Senior forward Chrissy Burghardt (Rockaway, N.J./ Morris Hills) scored 14 point s and pulled down seven rebounds.

Shenandoah's junior center Christal Awkward (Staunton, Va./ Robert E. Lee) led all scorers with 20 points. Junior guard Jill VanGuilder (Suffolk, Va./ Nansemond-Suffolk) scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

The Generals will search for their first victory when they travel to Villa Julie College in Baltimore on Monday night for a 7:00 game.
