LEXINGTON, VA -- Washington and Lee's women's soccer team suffered its first loss of 1998 on Thursday afternoon to the hands of Roanoke College, by a score of 2-1.
Roanoke took the lead with just 3:43 left in the first half, when junior forward Melissa Stanhewicz (Fairfield, Conn./ Fairfield) scored from 25 yards out to give the Maroons the lead and the Generals their first deficit of the season.
The Generals evened the game up 6:15 into the second half when sophomore midfielder Shana Levine (Hudson, Ohio/ Hudson) scored her fourth goal of the season on a direct kick.
With 19:19 left, Roanoke's senior midfielder Tori Erickson (Greensboro, N.C,) put the Maroons up for good when she scored on a penalty kick.
The win was Roanoke's first victory against W&L in its last three chances.
The Generals will look to get back in the win column on Saturday afternoon, when they travel to Atlanta for a non-conference battle with Emory University. Kick-off will be at 1:00.
