W&L Volleyball Wins Goucher Invitational

TOWSON, Md. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball posted a 4-0 record on Saturday afternoon, claiming the championship of the Goucher Invitational.

The Generals defeated Alvernia 15-6, 15-12, 15-10 and Goucher 15-13, 15-13, 6-15, 15-12 in the preliminary rounds, then defeated Seton Hill 15-3, 13-15, 15-11, 15-8 to advance to the finals.

In the finals, the Generals defeated host Goucher 15-12, 20-18, 15-4 to win their second tournament championship of the season. W&L also won its own W&L invitational to begin the season.

Against Alvernia, freshman middle blocker Lindsay Ruckert (Metairie, La./Sacred Heart) posted 16 kills, while sophomore setter Pam Saulsbury (Ridgely, Md./North Caroline) had 23 assists and four aces.

In the first win over Goucher, Ruckert totaled 22 kills and 15 digs, with Saulsbury totaling 24 assists and 10 digs. Junior outside hitter and tournament MVP Nancy Reinhart (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart) had seven kills and 24 digs.

Against Seton Hill, junior defensive specialist Tori Hays (Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe) totaled 20 digs and five aces and Reinhart amassed 16 kills and 25 digs.

In the championship game, the Generals were led by Ruckert with 11 kills, 12 digs, and four blocks and Saulsbury with 27 assists.

Ruckert also earned all-tournament team honors for the Generals, who are now 20-2 on the season.

Washington and Lee will resume its schedule on Thursday, November 22 when it hosts Christopher Newport in a 6:30 pm match.
