LEXINGTON, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney amassed 395 yards of total offense and held the ball for 40:48 of the game, including the final 9:28 in defeating Washington and Lee, 21-14, in ODAC football.
The Tigers (3-3, 2-2) opened the scoring with 13 seconds remaining in the first quarter when junior running back Shannon Evans (Midlothian, Va./Clover Hill) scored on a one-yard plunge to make it 7-0. Evans scored his second touchdown of the day on another one-yard run with 3:51 remaining in the second quarter to put the Tigers up 14-0.
The Generals (1-5, 0-3) cut into the Hampden-Sydney lead with 1:07 remaining in the opening half when sophomore running back Marc Watson (Marietta, Ga./Walton) scored on a one-yard run to make it 14-7 going in at the half.
W&L then tied the game at 14-14 with 6:42 remaining in the third stanza when Watson scored his second touchdown of the day, this time on a 51-yard scamper. He finished the day with a career-high 155 yards rushing on 27 carries.
Hampden-Sydney scored the game-winner with 11:27 remaining in the fourth quarter when freshman wide-out Neal Herndon (Dry Forks, Va./Tunstall) caught a 16-yard scoring strike from junior quarterback Walt Bondurant (Smithfield, Va./Nansemond-Suffolk).
Junior running back Trey Kern (Winchester, Va./John Handley) led the Hampden-Sydney attack with 100 yards on 23 carries. Bondurant completed 14-of-22 attempts for 189 yards and one touchdown.
Sophomore free safety Will Baker (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) totaled a career-high 17 tackles and two pass break-ups for the W&L defense.
The Generals will be back in action on October 24, when they entertain Sewanee in a non-conference affair at 1:30 pm.
