Sarah Hollen ’22 was appointed as an assistant coach for the Washington and Lee track & field and cross country programs on July 1, 2024.
In her first year on staff, Hollen helped guide the Generals to two of the most successful cross country seasons in program history. The women captured the ODAC Championship, the NCAA South Region Championship, and placed eighth at the NCAA Division III National Championship, while the men finished second in the ODAC and 21st nationally. She also assisted the women’s track & field team to ODAC titles in both indoor and outdoor competition, with the men finishing as conference runner-up in both seasons.
A standout student-athlete at W&L, Hollen competed in cross country and track & field for four years. She was named the 2018 ODAC Cross Country Rookie of the Year, served as a team captain, and was part of the 2019 Regional Championship and NCAA Championship-qualifying cross country squad. On the track, she was a five-time scorer in the middle-distance events at ODAC Championships.
Beyond athletics, Hollen distinguished herself academically and in the community. She graduated magna cum laude with Bachelor of Arts degrees in economics and environmental studies and a minor in poverty and human capability studies. She is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Omicron Delta Kappa, and Omicron Delta Epsilon. She also participated in the Generals Leadership Academy, interned with the Boxerwood Education Association and Nature Center, coordinated the GEAR-Up initiative to connect student-athletes with environmental service, and co-launched the Rockbridge County Envirothon program.
In 2025-26, Hollen was named a Tara VanDerveer Fellow by the Women’s Sports Foundation, one of only 11 recipients nationwide. The $15,000 fellowship supports professional development for women coaches and recognizes rising leaders in collegiate athletics. She also serves as the leader of W&L’s Green Athletics initiative and currently serves on the board of the Boxerwood Education Association and Nature Center.
