Jay Friedman

Jay Friedman is in his first year as assistant men's tennis coach and assistant director of the Duchossois Tennis Center. 

Friedman comes to W&L from the University of South Florida, where he served as a special assistant on the men’s tennis coaching staff, P.E. tennis instructor and teaching assistant in the clinical exercise testing and prescription lab from 2014-16 while earning a master of science in exercise science. 

As a member of the coaching staff, Friedman helped guide the Bulls to a pair of American Athletic Conference titles and the highest national ranking in program history when they peaked at No. 13.  The 2015 team advanced to the Round of 16 at the NCAA Division I Championships.

Prior to South Florida, Friedman was an assistant men’s and women’s tennis coach at Stony Brook University from 2010-14, helping the Seawolves women’s program to three America East Conference Championships and coaching the school’s first-ever NCAA Singles Championship qualifier.  He was named the ITA Northeast Region Division I Assistant Coach of the Year in 2014 and was a part of the America East Women’s Tennis Coaching Staff of the Year in 2012, 2013 and 2014 and the America East Men’s Tennis Coaching Staff of the Year in 2014. 

Friedman began his coaching career at Allegheny College, assisting the men’s and women’s programs for the 2007-08 school year.  He founded the online fitness training website ChampionMade.com and served as the head training assistant for the site from 2008-10, and served as the strength and tennis coach at The Claremont Club during the same time period.  His experience also includes serving as the director of tennis at the Bayport-Bluepoint Community Tennis Association (2011).

A 2007 graduate of George Mason University with a bachelor of science in health, fitness and recreation services, Friedman was a four-year starter and captain of the men’s tennis team.  He was also an Intercollegiate Tennis Association Scholar-Athlete.
