WINCHESTER, Va. — The Washington and Lee University men's cross country team placed third in a 10-team field at the SU Twilight Open, hosted by Shenandoah University on Friday evening at Kernstown Battlefield.

The Generals totaled 62 points in the 6K race, finishing behind Roanoke (32) and Division I VMI (48). The Blue and White placed five runners among the top 20 overall and produced a scoring-five average of 20:44, with just 50.1 seconds separating its first and fifth scorers. The Generals' five scoring runners combined for a time of 1:43:40.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Davis Amare paced W&L with a fourth-place finish, completing the 6K course in 20:17.2 at an average kilometer pace of 3:22.9. First-year Jake Miranda followed in seventh at 20:23.2, giving the Generals two runners among the top seven.

First-year Jason Oberly crossed the line 15th in 20:55.3, while Kaden Rife finished 17th in 20:56.9. Rookie Will Pacey rounded out the scoring five in 19th at 21:07.3.

Mitchell DiMond (24th, 21:39.3) and Andrew Carroll (27th, 21:49.3) completed the Generals' top seven. W&L also received finishes from Jack Camp (31st, 22:04.8) and Jaden Brighter (36th, 22:30.2).

Up next, members of the Washington and Lee men's cross country team will travel to Connecticut for the Cardinal Invitational, hosted by Wesleyan on Saturday, Sept. 19. Racing is slated to begin at noon.

RACE NOTES

• Roanoke claimed the team title behind four top-10 finishers and five runners among the first 14, posting a 20:14 scoring average.
• VMI finished 14 points ahead of W&L for second place, with all five of its scorers finishing between sixth and 13th.
• W&L's 50.1-second scoring spread was the second-smallest among the top four teams, trailing only VMI's 27.8-second spread.
• Roanoke's Nathan Orban earned the individual victory in 19:29.7, edging teammate Parker Blosser (19:57.7). Gallaudet sophomore Sevan Ikeda placed third in 20:11.8 before Amare crossed fourth as W&L's top finisher.
• The Generals placed five runners in the top 19 and seven in the top 27 of the 88-runner field.
