No. 20 Generals Place Eighth in Loaded Pre-Nationals Field

NORTHFIELD, Minn. — The No. 20 Washington and Lee University men's cross country team placed eighth among 35 teams Saturday afternoon at the Running of the Cows Pre-Nationals, hosted by Carleton College at the Bill Huyck Cross Country Course.

The Generals totaled 217 points in the 8K race, finishing ahead of 27 teams in a field that included 17 nationally ranked programs. W&L outpaced five teams ranked ahead of it in the national poll — No. 6 Pomona-Pitzer, No. 10 Tufts, No. 12 Williams, No. 17 Hope and No. 19 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

No. 5 Wartburg captured the team title with 110 points, followed by No. 3 Johns Hopkins (123) and top-ranked Wisconsin-La Crosse (144). No. 9 Wisconsin-Stevens Point (182), No. 8 RPI (189), No. 13 Washington University (195) and No. 21 MIT (208) also finished ahead of the Generals.

Junior Sam Daunt led W&L with a 10th-place finish in a season-best 24:43.0. L1 Matt Kelly followed in 19th at 24:59.3, while senior Robert Cooper gave the Generals three runners among the top 25 with a 25th-place time of 25:03.9.

Junior William Dunaway crossed the line 84th overall in 25:38.7 and contributed 79 team points, while senior Jackson Kodenski completed the scoring five in 89th overall at 25:42.0. The Generals' five scorers combined for a time of 2:06:07, averaging 25:14 with a 59-second spread.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 17, at Roanoke's South Region Showdown, hosted by Roanoke College at Green Hill Park in Salem, Va. The meet is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.

RACE NOTES

  • W&L placed three runners among the top 25, with Daunt, Kelly and Cooper separated by just 20.9 seconds.
  • The Generals finished ahead of five higher-ranked teams: No. 6 Pomona-Pitzer (9th, 223 points), No. 10 Tufts (10th, 252), No. 12 Williams (11th, 285), No. 17 Hope (13th, 397) and No. 19 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (15th, 489).
  • W&L finished just six points ahead of ninth-place Pomona-Pitzer and nine points behind seventh-place MIT.
  • The Generals' scoring five averaged 25:14 and were separated by 59 seconds.
  • Senior Thomas Franklin clocked a season-best 25:46.4 as W&L's sixth scorer, while junior Davis Amare rounded out the scoring seven in 26:03.9.
  • W&L's top seven combined for a time of 2:57:58, averaging 25:26 with a 1:21 spread.
  • The Generals were ninth at the opening 1K split before moving as high as seventh during the race and ultimately finishing eighth.
