Men’s Swimming Conquers Colonels, 180-80

LEXINGTON, Va. -.The Washington and Lee University men's swimming team won their second-straight dual meet of the weekend, defeating Centre College 180-80 on Sunday afternoon inside the W&L Natatorium.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE MEET
  • The Blue and White won 13 of the 14 events this afternoon on their way to their second dual win of the weekend. The Generals have won 21 straight duals against the Colonels, dating back to their first win in 1991.
  • Matt Fritz had a hand in four wins this afternoon, being a member of both winning relay teams and notching two individual wins in the 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly. Fritz clocked in a winning time of 53.09 in the 100 backstroke before posting a time of 51.08 in the 100 butterfly to finish in first place. 
  • Fritz teamed up with Charles Byars, Harrison Cerone and Baxter Smelzer in the 200 medley relay, finishing in first place with a time of 1:33.28. He later teamed up with Leighton Chapman, Smelzer and Dalton Jobe in the 200 free relay, helping them turn in a first place finish with a time of 1:25.02.
  • Jobe had three total wins this afternoon, finishing in first place in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:42.51 before clocking in a winning time of 4:43.66 in the 500 freestyle.
  • Smelzer picked up a solo win in the 50 freestyle, posting a time of 21.42 while Chapman finished in first in the 100 freestyle with a time of 47.76. 
  • Cerone and John Ramos picked up wins in the 100 and 200 breaststroke on Sunday. Cerone finished in first place in the 100 breaststroke, clocking in a time of 58.50 while Ramos posted a time of 2:14.35 in the 200 breaststroke to finish in first place. 
  • Reese Nelson clocked in a time of 1:57.96 in the 200 butterfly to finish in first place while Carter Whetstine posted a winning time of 1:58.34 in the 200 backstroke. Thomas Denton posted the final win of the afternoon for the Blue and White, clocking in a time of 1:58.55 to finish in first in the 200 individual medley.

  • The Blue and White are back in action on Saturday, Oct. 19 as they travel to Pittsburgh, Pa. for a dual meet against Carnegie Mellon University at 11 a.m.
