LEXINGTON, Va. - The No. 21 Washington and Lee University wrestling team earned a 19-18 win over Averett University on Saturday night to celebrate Senior Day.
Trailing 18-12 going into the 197 bout, the Generals (10-4, 4-1 ODAC) posted two decision wins from
John Santowski and senior
John Ryan Sedovy to tie up the team score with the Cougars (19-6, 3-1). All notched up, the two teams entered the tie-break and W&L was awarded a team point based on 'Criteria A' with six bout wins to Averett's four.
With two matches to go, Santowski needed to post a win over 14th-ranked Jamar Christian to give the Blue and White a chance at earning a team victory. The sophomore did his part with a 5-2 decision to cut the deficit down to three, 18-15, in favor of AU. Sedovy then performed his last-bout-heroics for the third time this month with a 5-1 decision over 10th-ranked Trent Ragland.
