ROANOKE, Va - The 18th-ranked Washington and Lee University wrestling team dropped an Old Dominion Athletic Conference dual to No. 20 Roanoke College on Saturday night, 23-17, after splitting the ten weight classes.

The Generals (9-4, 3-1 ODAC) dropped the first three bouts of the evening and were unable to overcome the Maroon's (10-3, 4-0 ODAC) fast start. However, W&L ended on a high note and secured wins in five of the last eight weight classes.

IN BRIEF

  • Today's matchup was the second time the two teams squared up over the last week. W&L defeated Roanoke 23-18 on Saturday, Jan. 13 at the Budd Whitehill Duals and the contest came down to the 285 match in sudden victory.
  • Today, the Maroons jumped out to a 15-0 lead after the 141 bout thanks to a major decision, technical fall and pin. The differential proved to be too much for the Generals.
  • After the 15-point deficit, W&L rebounded with back-to-back wins in the 149 (major decision) and 157 (decision) weights. The two squads then alternated wins through the rest of the evening at the Mill Mountain Theater until the 197 and 285 classes where John Santowski posted a major decision and John Ryan Sedovy battled to a tie breaker-1 win.
  • For the second week in a row, Sedovy and Roanoke's Brady Elswick went into extra time after finishing regulation knotted up at 1-1. The duo went scoreless in the first sudden victory period; Sedovy maintained a top position and rode for the entire 30 seconds in the first period of the riding time tie breaker (TB). In the second period of TB, Sedovy recorded an escape from the bottom position to earn the 2-1 win.
  • Evan Lindner, Harris Foad, Harrison Kelly, Santowski and Sedovy were the five weight class winners for W&L.
