DANVILLE, Va. - The Washington and Lee University wrestling team downed Averett University on Saturday night, 28-6.
To earn the road win, the Generals (10-2, 4-1 ODAC) posted a fall, major decision, sudden victory and five decisions against the Cougars (15-8, 2-1).
The Old Dominion Athletic Conference match opened up at the 157 bout and
Ryan Luth (Milford, Conn. / Jospeh A. Foran) posted a pair of takedowns in the opening period. He then escaped after Jesse Alvarado's top choice in the second and finished off the first match of the night with a riding time point to win 6-1.
Mark Troni (Denver, Colo. / Mullen) picked up the 165 weight win over Anthony Taylor, a high-scoring 15-12 decision, and gave W&L an early 6-0 lead.
Seniors
Cameron Blizard (Greensboro, N.C. / Ragsdale) and
Matt Majoy (Syosset, N.Y. / Syosset) went on to record decision wins in the 184 and 285 weights, respectively. The two sandwiched a 197 weight
John Ryan Sedovy (Lexington, Va. / Rockbridge) sudden victory. Sedovy managed a takedown as time expired in the first overtime period and won 3-1.
At the top of the weight order,
Riley Parker (Virginia Beach, Va. / First Colonial) and Mason Barrett went scoreless for the first two periods. Parker received the choice going into the third period which proved to be the difference-maker. Parker chose the bottom position and followed up his quick escape with a take down and riding time to win a 4-0 decision. Going into the final three weight classes, the Generals led 18-3 and needed to win just one more class to secure the conference win.
David Rubin (Matawan, N.J. / Matawan Regional) wrapped up Olli Karjalaien at the 1:45 mark for a first period pin in the 133 bout.
Evan Lindner (New Milford, Conn. / New Milford) accompanied the fall with a major decision, he recorded four takedowns, a reversal and riding time for the 11-2 score.
Averett earned decision wins at the 149 and 174 weight classes.
Statistically, W&L recorded 20 takedowns to AU's nine, escaped the Cougars 13 times and tallied five riding time points.
The Generals return to the mat on Thursday, February 2 at Southern Virginia University for an ODAC dual.
