WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Washington and Lee wrestling team split a pair of matches on Friday in the first day of competition at the Budd Whitehill Duals hosted by Lycoming College.
 
W&L opened the day with a narrow 25-19 loss to Messiah and then rebounded to notch a 40-8 victory over Castleton.
 
In the opening loss to Messiah, the Generals jumped out to a 6-0 advantage following wins by decision by junior Riley Parker (Virginia Beach, Va. / First Colonial) at 125 pounds and first-year David Rubin (Matawan, N.J. / Matawan Regional) at 133 pounds.  The Falcons responded with three straight wins, including two wins by fall, to assume a 17-6 lead heading into the 165-pound bout.
 
Senior Joe Salerno (Princeton Junction, N.J. / West Windsor-Plainsboro South) pinned his opponent in just 22 seconds to make it 17-12 and junior Cameron Blizard (Greensboro, N.C. / Ragsdale) posted a 13-3 major decision to make it a 17-16 contest with three matches remaining.  Senior Brad Basham (Burlington, Mass. / Buckingham Browne & Nichols) suffered a tight 3-2 loss at 184 pounds, but sophomore John Ryan Sedovy (Lexington, Va. / Rockbridge County) notched his own 1-point win (2-1) to make it a 20-19 match heading into the final bout at 285 pounds.  Messiah's Carter Urich then pinned senior Clay Chadwick (Arlington, Va. / Yorktown) in 1:55 to clinch the match for Messiah.
 
In the second match, the Generals never trailed, winning five of the first six matches to open a 27-5 lead.  W&L won four of the five opening matches by fall, with Parker, senior Charlie Cunningham (Pequannock, N.J. / Seton Hall Prep), sophomore Harrison Kelly (Berkeley Heights, N.J. / Governor Livingston) and Salerno all pinning their opponents.  Sedovy added a pin at 197 pounds as well.
 
Washington and Lee, now 5-1 overall, will compete in the championship round on Saturday.  The Generals open with Ithaca at 9:00 am and the place matches will occur at 12:00 pm.
