LEXINGTON, Va. – The Virginia Sports Hall of Fame is set to honor Washington and Lee University as the recipient of the 2021 Hall of Fame Eddie Webb Achievement Award for the College Division.
Virginia Sports Hall of Fame Executive Director Will Driscoll will present the award to Washington and Lee Michael F. Walsh Director of Athletics
Jan Hathorn at halftime of Saturday's women's basketball game against the University of Lynchburg.
Since 1996, the Hall of Fame has presented the Achievement Award to the University (NCAA Division-I) and College Division (Division-II and-III) institutions that achieve the highest overall winning percentage in intercollegiate athletics in the Commonwealth. The award is named in Webb's honor, in recognition of his 24 years of service as President of the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame.
The Hall of Fame uses data compiled by the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) in presenting the Hall of Fame Achievement Awards. VaSID reported that W&L produced a 75.8 winning percentage for the 2020-21 school year, as the Generals' teams compiled a 155-36-2 overall record. The Blue & White won five conference championships and made four appearances in the NCAA Division III Championship.
This is the second time that W&L has claimed the Hall of Fame Achievement Award, with the first occurring in 2007.
"W&L is especially proud to have our student athletes, coaches and staff be acknowledged in this way by the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame," said Hathorn. "Given all the obstacles presented by the pandemic in 2020-2021, this award truly underscores the love our outstanding people have for their sport and speaks to the heart of what it takes to overcome those obstacles to achieve at this level. I want to thank the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame for this award. It is truly an honor to be so recognized."
Since 1972, the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame has been proud to honor Virginia's contributions to the world of sports. As the Commonwealth's official hall of fame, the mission is to honor athletic excellence, serve as a nonprofit resource highlighting philanthropy through sports, while inspiring sports fans through programming and engaging entertainment.
