Four W&L Greats Named to the SoCon 100th Anniversary Teams

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Southern Conference, which has celebrated 100 years of athletic competition in 2021, wrapped up its celebration on Thursday afternoon by releasing its 100th anniversary teams.

Several Washington and Lee greats were among those honored by the conference, including four members of the W&L Athletics Hall of Fame.

Dom Flora '58 earned the honor in both baseball and basketball, while Eddie Cameron '24 was selected for football.  Wrestling earned a pair of honorees in Rowland Thomas '36 and Ted Lonergan '51.

Flora was inducted into the W&L Athletics Hall of Fame in 1989 after a career that saw him earn the Southern Conference Athlete of the Year Award in 1958.  He is still W&L's all-time leading scorer in basketball (2,310 pts).

Cameron was inducted into the W&L Athletics Hall of Fame in 1988 and he is a 1976 inductee into the College Football Hall of Fame. Most notably, he went on to coach at Duke University and the school's basketball arena (Cameron Indoor Stadium) bears his name.

Thomas was a three-time Southern Conference wrestling champion and is a 1996 inductee into the W&L Athletics Hall of Fame.  Lonergan was also a three-time league champion and he was named the 1951 SoCon Championship Outstanding Wrestler.

W&L was a charter member of the Southern Conference, joining 13 other institutions in Atlanta on February 25, 1921 to create the league.  Other charter members included Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi State, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Tennessee, Virginia and Virginia Tech.  Tulane also attended and joined the next year.

The Generals competed in the SoCon from 1921-1958, winning numerous conference titles across men's basketball (1934, 1938), football (1934, 1950), men's golf (1934, 1955), men's swimming (1935, 1936, 1937, 1938), men's track & field (1930) and wrestling (1932, 1933, 1934, 1936, 1941, 1948, 1949, 1950).
