LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's swimming team topped Mary Washington by a score of 157-105 in its first dual meet of the season on Saturday.
Highlights from the meet:
-W&L edged UMW in total events won, 8-6, and had five different swimmers combine to win six individual events. The Generals won both relays on the day, the 200 medley relay (1:36.80) and the 200 free relay (1:27.13). In total, 11 different swimmers combined for 15 top-two finishes.

Luke Nagel (Wayne, Pa. / Conestoga) won a pair of individual races to lead the team, topping the field in the 200 free (1:47.37) and 500 free (5:00.38). First-year
Baxter Smelzer (Greensboro, N.C. / Page) contributed to three wins on the day, including the 100 free (49.17) and both relays.

Todd Echols (Winston Salem, N.C. / RJ Reynolds) both posted two top-two finishes apiece, as Hughes added a second-place finish in the 200 free (1:47.68), Smelzer placed second in the 50 free (21.99) and Echols finished second in both the 100 breast (1:00.91) and 200 breast (2:16.38).
